When the snow comes to Chester

The sled dog race site is on our road

This is the thing about this property that nobody has written down, so we will. The Sierra Nevada Dog Drivers publish directions to their Chester race site, and the landmark in them is this building:

Our address is 1487 County Road 324. The race site is a little further down the same road. Teams have come to Chester from several western states, and a race weekend brings mushers, handlers, trucks, dog boxes and families, all of whom need somewhere to sleep within a short drive of a start line rather than an hour away.

Snowmobiling

This is what fills this valley in February. The Lake Almanor Area Chamber names five staging areas near Chester: the Chester-Lake Almanor Snowmobile Park, Swain Mountain, Morgan Summit, Jonesville and Fredonyer.

The Chamber also makes the headline claim for the network, and because it is their claim and not a Forest Service figure, we attribute it rather than assert it: "459 miles of designated snowmobile trails, the most groomed trails in California."

Swain Mountain, the one to start at

Swain Mountain has 60 miles of groomed trails, which include three loop trails. All routes are easy. It is usually the first staging area to open with enough snow for snowmobiling when winter commences and the last area to thaw in the spring. The area provides direct access to the Bogard and Fredonyer trail systems, offering 200 miles of marked trails (both groomed and ungroomed).

First open and last to thaw is the practical detail. In a thin year it is the area with snow when the others do not have it. The Forest Service puts Swain roughly nine miles north of Westwood off County Road A-21, and also reachable "east of Chester at the Chester-Lake Almanor Staging Area on Highway 36".

The others, with what we could actually verify

• Morgan Summit. 77 miles of groomed trails, a large parking area, restrooms and a warming hut, four miles east of Mineral on Highway 36. Forest Service, read 23 September 2026.
• Jonesville. About two miles east of Cherry Hill Campground on Humboldt Road, Butte County Road 91422, reached via Highway 32. Forest Service, read 23 September 2026.
• Fredonyer. Listed by the Forest Service as an open winter staging area on the east side, toward Susanville.
• Chester-Lake Almanor Snowmobile Park. The Forest Service places it east of Chester on Highway 36.

Snowmobiles are prohibited in designated Wilderness and inside Lassen Volcanic National Park, and the Forest Service specifically reminds riders that the Caribou Wilderness and the national park sit close to the groomed trails around Swain Mountain. Know where the boundary is before you are on the wrong side of it.

The agency to ask about grooming and current conditions is the Forest Service's Almanor Ranger District, at 900 E. Highway 36 in Chester. Their contact details are on the Lassen National Forest site, and they are the people who know what was groomed this week.

The park in winter

Lassen Volcanic stays open through the winter. What closes is almost all of the driving.

Vehicle access is limited to Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center (southwest entrance) and Loomis Plaza/Manzanita Lake parking area (northwest entrance).

Both of those areas offer winter routes for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, and areas for sledding and snowplay. The main park road typically closes mid to late November, and our own Warner Valley and Juniper Lake roads are not maintained in winter at all, approximately November to June.

The fee is the part worth knowing. From 1 December to 15 April, entry is $10, whether you arrive in a car, on a motorcycle or on foot. In summer the same car pays $30. Nobody in this corridor seems to mention it.

Getting here in snow

Highway 36 and Highway 89 are the two roads in, and they meet at our corner. Both are maintained through the winter, and both can be under chain control after a storm.

• Check Caltrans QuickMap before you set off, at quickmap.dot.ca.gov. It carries live chain control, closures and cameras for both highways.
• Carry chains and know how to fit them. Chain control is enforced on these roads and a rental car with summer tyres is not an argument that works at the checkpoint.
• The route through the national park is not an option. The park highway is shut. Coming from the west you stay on Highway 36 over the summit; coming from the east you come through Susanville and Westwood.
• Allow for dark. These are unlit mountain highways and winter afternoons are short.

Two things to email us about before you book

If you are arriving with a truck and a sled trailer, or in an RV in February, there are two questions that decide whether this works for you, and we would rather answer them for your particular rig than publish a general claim that turns out to be wrong for it.

1. Turning and parking a truck and trailer in snow, and where it sits overnight.
2. RV water in winter, which is the question every winter RV guest asks and the one that depends on the week.

What we can say now: the motel rooms have radiant heating and a kitchenette with a coffee maker, kettle and microwave, and the RV sites are 50 amp full hookup. The motel rooms open onto a covered walkway, which is where wet gear goes.

What to bring

• Chains, and a mat to kneel on. Fitting them in slush at four and a half thousand feet is nobody's favourite twenty minutes.
• A shovel. For the car, not for us.
• Boots that are actually waterproof, and a second pair of gloves, because the first pair gets wet.
• Food for one night. Chester's shops keep short winter hours and you may arrive after they close. The rooms have a kitchenette.
• Your Forest Service maps or GPS loaded offline. Cell coverage on the trail network is thin.
