Guided experiences
We sit at the junction of Highway 36 and Highway 89, three miles west of Chester. That address decides what there is to do here, and what there is to do changes completely four times a year. These are the three guides worth reading before you pick your dates.
Every figure on these pages carries a source and the date we checked it. Where we could not verify something, we left it out rather than repeat it.
Each one is a page we would be happy to read out at the desk: what it is, when to come, what it costs, how far it is, and the thing people get wrong. They are written to be useful to somebody who has not booked yet.
Warner Valley and Juniper Lake are the two entrances that start in Chester, and both are dirt for their last miles. The park road through the middle is shut most of the year, and the opening date has moved by six weeks between one year and the next.

Read the Lassen guideThe lake is open to trout fishing every month of the year under the statewide rule, with a five trout daily bag. Its tributaries are not, and that is the thing that costs people a citation. Plus the Hex hatch, and the paved trail down the west shore.
Best from: May to September, and any month at all.
Read the lake guideFive staging areas put snowmobiles on the Lassen National Forest trail network, the park drops its entrance fee to ten dollars, and a sled dog race site sits on the road outside our door.

Read the winter guideTwo of these are not general area content. They begin on the road we are on, and as far as we can tell nobody has said so on a lodging page before.

Our address is 1487 County Road 324. Teams, handlers and spectators need a bed inside walking distance of a start line that sits a little further along our own road.
We are not printing a date, because the organiser has not set one. Their events page carries no scheduled date for the next Chester meet as of 23 September 2026. When they publish one, it goes on the winter guide and not before.
The Lake Almanor Area Chamber publishes a fifteen mile route, rated easy, about an hour and a half one way, ending at the Canyon Dam Boat Launch. Their own first line:

The bakery is the building beside us on this stretch of Highway 36. Four miles of old Highway 89, then the Forest Service trail down the lake's west shore.
The Pacific Crest Trail crosses Highway 36 west of Chester, a little north of the trail's own midway post, and Chester is a standard resupply stop in this stretch. Hikers hitch in from the crossing for a shower, a post office box and a hot meal.
We are at the 36 and 89 junction, three miles west of town, which puts us between the crossing and Main Street rather than the other side of it. A motel room sleeps up to five, which is the arithmetic that matters to a group walking in together.
The Rotary Club of Chester maintains the town's own resource page for hikers and it is better than anything we would write. From it, read 23 September 2026: Sports Nut opens 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Saturday and 8:00am to 1:00pm Sunday; hiker boxes sit at Ayoob's Intermountain Hardware, Cravings and Watkins Pet Supply; the post office is at 218 Laurel Lane; and Watkins and Sports Nut take UPS and FedEx only, no USPS.
We have not yet published whether we hold packages or run rides to the trailhead. When those are settled they will be stated here plainly, in the same address format a hiker can copy. Until then, do not assume either one: email us and we will answer.
Nothing about this valley is the same in February as it is in July, and a lodging page that pretends otherwise is selling something that is not open. This is the honest shape of the year.

We are open every month of the year, which in this corridor is not the normal arrangement.

No booking fee, no resort fee, no cleaning fee. Plumas County adds 9 percent occupancy tax and a 3 percent tourism district assessment, both stopping after 30 nights. First bookable night is 30 September 2026.
